Fairbanks, AK—Strange Birds Passing
May 18, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
“For the Birds” is the theme of the Fairbanks Flutists 39th annual concert. There is no shortage of flute music depicting birds, and this program displays a wide range of styles from classical to very modern (and effective) avian sounds. Twenty flutsists will be performing on various flutes from the piccolo through the very low alto and bass flutes. An ensemble of French horns accompanies a solo flute on one of the pieces. The concert is approximately one hour long and a reception follows.
Wrapping up the concert will be Vivaldi’s “The Goldfinch Concerto” — the most traditional piece on the program — with Fairbanks Symphony flutist Bobbi Janiro as soloist.
In addition to the pieces depicting French and Australians birds, the flute group is performing “Alaskan Birds: Summer Tern” by Emerson Eads, a graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and noteworthy composer, and “Strange Birds Passing” by John Luther Adams, an Alaska composer now living in New York City who won the Pulitzer prize for music about three years ago. He dedicated the piece to “Dorli McWayne and the Fairbanks Flutists.”
