Martynov Piano Concerto
Steve Reich / orchestration Anthony Fiumara Music for 18 Musicians
Minimal from the USA, Asia and Europe comes together in this special concert. The North Netherlands Orchestra considers it important to play current music. Pianist Ralph van Raat plays the world premiere of the piano concerto that Russian spiritual-minimalist Vladimir Martynov wrote for him. In addition, the beautiful Mysteries by Louis Andriessen, an adaptation of Steve Reich’s classic Music for 18 Musicians and an overwhelming natural scene by landscape composer John Luther Adams.
On 6 June 2019 Louis Andriessen celebrates his 80th birthday. He is regarded as the most important Dutch composer of his generation. The North Netherlands Orchestra honors Andriessen with the performance of Mysteries. He composed this work in 2013 for the 125th anniversary of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
With the Noord Nederlands Orkest and Andriessen specialist Jurjen Hempel, the work was still ‘more striking, direct, unruly, with more tension and drive two years later,’ says NRC. An excellent opportunity to experience Andriessen’s first orchestral work in the best possible way since the 1960s. After Mysteries, Ralph van Raat plays a solo piano work by Martynov.
