Spokane, WA—Dark Waves

November 8 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

JAMES LOWE, CONDUCTOR
LORNA MCGHEE, FLUTE

Two works inspired by the sea — a century apart. Dark Waves, by Alaskan-based composer John Luther Adams, blends electronics with full symphony to create shimmering waves of sound. Debussy expressed childhood memories in La mer (The Sea), a trio of “orchestral sketches.” The concert opens with a lost gem, a soaring testament to the love of a wandering musician for a beautiful and far-off princess. Lorna McGhee, one of the world’s finest flutists, brings us Nielsen’s melodic and occasionally comedic flute concerto that pits the soloist against a somewhat bullying bass trombone.

THE MUSIC
Nikolai Tcherepnin — Prelude to The Distant Princess

Carl Nielsen — Flute Concerto

Lili Boulanger — D’un matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning)

John Luther Adams — Dark Waves

Claude Debussy — La mer (The Sea)
